Racing Wodonga Charity Gala

Part-owner of the retired champion racehorse Winx, Debbie Kepitis reflects on the much loved mare ahead of a charity event at Racing Wodonga on 22 May.

Speaking with Kylie and Kev ahead of the Jack Maher Classic, Debbie says she never tires of sharing stories about Winx, known for her record breaking streak of 33 consecutive wins including 4 Cox Plates.

“It’s wonderful to be asked to talk about something that was just such an amazing time and so much fun,” Debbie said.

“We were such lucky people and fortunate to have landed a horse like Winx and she took us on such a ride, so it’s fun to share it with everybody at these events.”

With an incredible run of success, Debbie says it’s difficult to pick one or two of her favourite stand-outs, but there are some moments that will stick with her for life.

“You’re anxious all the time, you pinch yourself, you hold your breath,” explained Debbie.

“Some of the moments that stick with you include when she missed the start of a race and was ten lengths behind everybody, then she flew home in a mathematical impossibility. Or when she passed the post with her first Cox Plate victory, because that was the pinnacle weight for age race to win – I had to close my eyes and couldn’t watch.”

Debbie still enjoys the thrill of being an owner of race horses, but has mixed emotions about the end of the Winx era.

“To be honest it was getting very emotional towards the end,” Debbie said.

“It wasn’t nice to have her finish racing, but I think my heart appreciated it.”
