Merv started with the Hawks in 1972 and became a vital part of their defence at centre half-back.

He had six premiership flags to his name over his 302-game career.

"The current squad might not know him, but there's quite a lot of us here at the club that he had a massive impact on," says Rovers President Wally Pasquali.

"He was a huge influential personality at the club. It's very sad news."

Holmes overcame some really serious injuries over his career, including a dislocated knee that had doctors saying he would never play again. He was back training eight weeks later.

"He was very loyal to the club and overcame many obstacles and challenges to play," says Pasquali.

"Just a really tough personality that formed the fabric of the club over the years."
