Two Men To Appear In Court

Two men will appear in court today charged with large commercial drug supply after police seized more than $1 million worth of heroin during a vehicle stop near Albury.

Just before 2.30pm yesterday (Tuesday 23 July 2019), officers from Albury Highway Patrol were patrolling the Hume Highway, southbound, near Holbrook, when they stopped the driver of a Subaru. During the search, police allegedly located six packages of heroin, with a total weight of 2.2kg, concealed within a hidden compartment in the boot of the Subaru.

The drugs have an estimated potential street value of more than $1.1 million.

Several mobile phones and other items were also located inside the vehicle and seized for forensic analysis.

Both men were arrested and taken to Albury Police Station, where they were charged with supply prohibited drug (large commercial quantity) and possess prohibited drug. The men were refused bail to appear at Albury Local Court today (Wednesday 24 July 2019).

Investigations are continuing.

Murray River Police District Crime Manager, Detective Inspector Winston Woodward, said yesterday’s seizure and arrests was a great result by the officers involved.

“Traffic and Highway Patrol Command officers are not only trained to reduce road trauma but are also trained in techniques that can lead to the detection of drugs and other contraband,” Det Insp Woodward said.

“The effects of heroin and all illicit drugs have devastating impacts on regional communities and this seizure means less drugs on our streets.

“I continue to appeal to all members of our community to provide information to police in relation to suspected drug suppliers – your information will be treated in confidence and acted upon,” Det Insp Woodward said
