A Dedication of Local Football to our Diggers.
Anzac round reminds me of this great poem, it's my favourite...
FOR THE FALLEN
With proud thanksgiving; a mother for her children,
England mourns her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her Spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.
Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal,
Sings sorrow up into the immortal spheres.
There is music in the midst of desolation,
And a glory that shines upon our tears
They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
THEY SHALL GROW NOT OLD, AS WE THAT ARE LEFT GROW OLD,
AGE SHALL NOT WEARY THEM, NOR THE YEARS CONDEMN.
AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN, AND IN THE MORNING,
WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.
They mingle not with their laughing comrades again,
They sit no more at familiar tables at home.
They have no lot in our labour of the daytime,
They sleep beyond England's foam.
But where our desires are, and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight.
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night.
As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain.
As the stars that are starry, in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.
By Laurence Binyon .
When I hear the Ode and the playing of the last post, I think about how lucky I am, lucky that I have the opportunity to live the way I do.
It gets me every time, a lump in my throat, a tear down the cheek, thinking about what those poor buggers went through and the tough decisions they made as one.
It's right what they say, we will remember them.
THEN. NOW. & FOREVER.
Our Anzac split round kicks off at the Lavington sports ground on Saturday.
O&M LIVE's broadcast team will see the Panthers and Saints do battle. Both clubs are coming off good wins and will be hungry for more points.
The Roos travel to challenge the Rovers on Saturday afternoon. Corowa kicked 5 unanswered goals in the third term against Albury and a bit more of that would certainly make the coaches happier. The Rovers are desperate for win number one.
Tuesday we will broadcast the big clash at Birralee park. The Raiders and Bulldogs will leave nothing on the field and I'm sure that a high standard of hard footy is certainly on the cards. It's a 3:15pm start.
The other Anzac game is at Tigerland. Albury vs Nth Albury. Over the years, the thought of this aggressive contest is always enough to draw a big crowd. Albury welcome back a few which could spell bad news for the Hoppers.
Yarrawonga and Wangaratta round it out for our O&M LIVE team as we make the trip down the Murray for the stand alone game. Both undefeated, both with a good mix of players with experience and youth. These two clubs are bringing an exciting brand of football.
Join us live from 1pm for pre-match on 1494 2AY. You won't miss a thing.
Enjoy your day.
LEST WE FORGET.
