Child Care Crisis
The fall-out continues following impending closure of seven rural child care centres in the border area.
Ongoing financial hemorrhaging by the governing body, Albury Wodonga Community College, has been cited as the reason for the closures at Mitta, Walwa, Walla, Kergunyah, Baranduda, Bellbridge and Henty.
The Chair of the Community College Board, Kevin Poulton blamed a change in the Government funding formula for the sudden escalation in losses, which he says is not sustainable.
"We lost around $30,000 a year providing this service to these outlying communities of Albury Wodonga, and it is now at a point where what we lost over the past 8 years we've lost in the space of 5 months and it's all based on a Government decision to change the funding and access to childcare".
Parents in several centres are upset at the impending closure of the child care centres in the area, and Mitta parents have called a public meeting on Wednesday December 5th, to discuss the crisis.
