Border Closure

Border Closure

The NSW-Victorian border closure comes into force today.

Today is the last day that people can travel freely between the border of NSW and Victoria.

For the first time in 100 years, two of the biggest states will be split up.

The shutdown will come into effect from midnight, announced by both premiers yesterday - and is expected to pose many problems for communities on the border such as Corowa-Rutherglen and Albury-Wodonga.

The military will support police as they prepare for the shut down. NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller says, "Please be patient, we understand the enormity of the situation, with 4 primary road crossings, 33 road bridges and multiple smaller roads in the 11 local government areas this will take some time".

"It's a very long border, someone can walk through the bush or swim through the river. There will be aerial surveillance right across the border".
"From midnight, it will be difficult to make that crossing and there will be delays."

There will be exemptions for critical services and essential workers but residents who need to cross the border to access health and other services will need to have a permit.

Further exemptions for border residents will be outlined by the Premier of NSW Gladys Berejiklian later today.
